Two headphones, one wallet. We've all been there. Let's go through what actually separates these two, so you don't have to flip a coin.
The short answer for busy people
VMK25 is Valco's flagship model. VMK20 is its more affordable little brother that sounds surprisingly good for the price. Both are wireless over-ear ANC headphones, both are repairable, and both fund our Death Star. The difference is in the details.
Materials and build
The VMK25 uses synthetic leather padding, the VMK20 uses fabric. In practice, this means the VMK25 passively isolates sound a bit better before the ANC even kicks in. Fabric padding, on the other hand, is more comfortable in summer – your ears breathe better. Both have their perks.
Build-wise, the VMK25 feels a touch more premium in hand. Not that the VMK20 feels cheap – absolutely not – but you can tell the difference.
Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)
Both have active noise cancellation. The VMK25's ANC is just more effective. It eats up more background noise, especially low frequencies like airplane hum or that office AC drone. The VMK20's ANC does its job just fine, but if you're sitting in an open-plan office eight hours a day and want maximum protection against your colleagues' small talk, the VMK25 is the better pick.
Both need music to help out – no headphone in this price range delivers perfect silence. Or in any price range, really.
Sound quality
This is where the gap narrows. Jasse has tuned both models carefully, and honestly, the VMK20 sounds better than many competitors' pricier models. The VMK25 has a slightly wider soundstage and more precise bass reproduction, but the difference isn't as dramatic as the price gap might suggest. Both sound great.
Battery life
Both will easily last a full workday. You'll find the exact numbers on the product pages at valco.fi, since they depend on ANC usage and volume level. Nobody has complained about running out of juice mid-day, though.
So which one?
If budget isn't an issue and you want the best possible ANC and materials: VMK25. And if you want even better, have a look at the VMK25.2 – it's the updated version of the VMK25 with revamped interior furnishings.
If you want excellent sound quality and solid noise cancellation at a sensible price: VMK20 is a cracking choice. You can spend the savings on a pint. Or on our Death Star – we do offer installment plans for that too.
If you're still agonising over the choice
