What is transparency mode and when should you use it?

Updated

Symptom

Customer doesn't know what transparency mode does or when it's worth using.

Quick Fix

Transparency mode lets ambient sounds through your headphones so you can hear traffic, announcements, and the cashier without taking your headphones off.

There's one button on noise cancelling headphones that many people never press. That's a shame, because transparency mode is one of the most useful features on the entire device. Let us explain.

Noise cancelling vs. transparency – two opposite ideas

Noise cancelling (ANC) does everything it can to keep the outside world out of your ears. It listens to the environment with microphones and produces an anti-sound that cancels out the noise. Brilliant in the office, on the train, or when your neighbour is drilling through the wall.

Transparency mode does the exact opposite. It uses the same microphones, but instead of cancelling sounds, it amplifies them and lets them through the headphones. You hear your surroundings as if you weren't wearing headphones at all – but your music still plays softly in the background.

Think of it this way: ANC is like closing a window. Transparency is like opening it.

When should you use transparency mode?

  • In traffic. This is the big one. When cycling or walking, you want to hear cars, trams, and those electric scooters that whoosh past like silent assassins. Wearing ANC in traffic is like walking with your eyes closed – technically possible, but stupid.
  • At the checkout or running errands. When the cashier asks if you want a receipt, you don't have to rip your headphones off and look like a muppet. One button press and you hear everything.
  • In the office when someone comes to chat. A colleague walks up to your desk and their lips are moving but you can't hear a thing. A classic. Transparency mode saves you from that awkward "what, huh?" spiral.
  • Announcements. Airports, train stations, bus stations. Places where an announcement can mean the difference between getting home and spending the night in a terminal.

How does it work on Valco headphones?

On the VMK20, VMK25, VMK25.2, and NL25 earbuds, transparency mode is on the ANC button. Press it and the mode cycles: ANC on – transparency – ANC off. A three-mode rotation.

In practice, you press the button once or twice and you hear the world again. Your music automatically dips a bit into the background. Press again and you're back in your own bubble.

The VMK15 and NL21 don't have transparency mode because they don't have ANC. With those, just pop one earbud out or lift one ear cup. Old-school transparency.

Can't you just take the headphones off?

Of course you can. But the whole point of transparency mode is that you don't have to. The headphones stay on your head, the music keeps playing, and you still hear what's going on around you. It's a convenience feature, not a necessity – but once you start using it, you won't want to go without.
