Nordell Mk3 won't charge – what to do?
The speaker's been charging like a champ all summer, and then suddenly – nothing. Charger's plugged in, the M-light might be on or completely dark, but the speaker won't turn on and doesn't seem to be charging. Sound familiar? This is one of the most common Nordell Mk3 support requests, and it usually gets sorted in a couple of minutes.
Why did the speaker stop charging?
The Mk3's protection circuit can sometimes get stuck. Basically, the speaker's electronics think they're in some weird limbo state and refuse to accept power. This typically happens when the battery has been completely drained – for example, the speaker's been sitting dead in a warehouse or car for weeks.
The other usual suspect is the charger. The Mk3 likes to get 5V/3A – perfectly standard USB-C power, but not all chargers are created equal. That cheap cable that came with some other device might be trickling out power like an IV drip.
How to fix it
1. Reset the speaker (works most of the time)
- Plug a USB-C charger into the speaker
- Hold the power button down for 5 seconds
- Let go and wait a moment
- If a charging light appears around the M-light, you're in business
2. Check the charger and cable
- Try a different USB-C cable – cables break internally more often than you'd think
- Try a different charger or power source (a computer's USB port is often too weak)
- Make sure the USB-C connector goes all the way in – the Mk3's port loves collecting pocket dust and lint
3. Give it some time
- If the battery has been completely drained, the speaker might look dead for the first 15–30 minutes on the charger
- Leave the charger plugged in and don't touch the device – let it wake up in peace
- Don't wait overnight though. If nothing happens within an hour, the problem is somewhere else.
4. Only charging to 80 percent?
- Yep, that's normal. The Mk3's battery protection may limit charging to around 80 percent, especially in warm environments. This extends the battery's lifespan and isn't a fault. You'll still get multiple days of playtime in practice, so no worries.
If nothing helps
If resetting, swapping cables, and waiting don't do the trick, it might be a hardware fault. Here's what to do:
- Send us an email at info@valco.fi
- Include your order number and a photo of the speaker (so we can check for any external damage while we're at it)
- Briefly describe what you've already tried
We have our own repair shop in Kajaani where devices get fixed. Your Mk3 won't end up in a landfill – it'll end up in the hands of Jasse or one of our other repair wizards. Warranty is 24 months, and repairs within that period won't cost you a thing.
If your speaker has been for a swim without the port cover on, or has been through other life adventures outside the warranty, a repair kit is still cheaper than a new device. Because here at Valco, we fix headphones and speakers – we don't chuck them in the bin.
