One Nordell Micro is mono. Two Nordell Micros are stereo. This article explains how to turn two little speakers into a pair, and why a speaker will never pair with headphones, no matter how hard you try.
Stereo pairing two Micros
- Turn on both speakers.
- Make sure neither one is connected to a phone: turn off Bluetooth or forget the devices for a moment.
- Press the Play/Pause button twice on one speaker. You'll hear a "di" sound.
- Do the same on the other speaker.
- Wait a moment. When you hear "di-di", the speakers have found each other.
- Now connect your phone over Bluetooth. Sound plays from both, in stereo.
Order matters: pair the speakers with each other first, then connect the phone. If the phone jumps in too early, the pairing gets tangled.
Unpairing
The stereo pair breaks up if you turn off one speaker, or if you do the Play/Pause double-tap again. After that, both go back to working as independent mono units.
The rules (i.e. physics and product design)
- Only identical models pair with each other: Micro + Micro, MK3 + MK3, Max + Max. Micro + Max won't work, they speak different dialects.
- A speaker won't pair with headphones. A Bluetooth speaker and Bluetooth headphones are both receivers: neither one can send audio to the other. Same reason two radios can't call each other.
- In an MK3 stereo pair, the 3D sound mode is switched off: two speakers in stereo already handle the sense of space on their own.
Troubleshooting
- No "di-di": make sure neither speaker is connected to any device, turn both off, and start over.
- Only one is playing: the phone connected to one speaker before the pair was formed. Disconnect it, break the pair, and redo it in the right order.
- The pair forgets itself after being switched off: repeat the double-tap ritual. Once they've learned each other, the speakers usually find each other faster the next time.
