Your head matters. That's where the brain lives, at least for most people. That's why headphones need to fit without feeling like someone's clamping your skull in a vice. If your Valco over-ear headphones are pressing on the top of your head or just feel off, the fix is usually simple.
Why does the top of your head hurt?
There are basically three reasons:
- The headband padding is worn out. Padding flattens over time, especially if you wear your headphones daily. That's normal wear. Once the padding is as flat as a pancake, it stops distributing pressure evenly and your scalp takes the full hit.
- The headband is adjusted to the wrong position. The cups sit too high or too low, so the headband presses on the wrong spot.
- The headband is still stiff because it's new. New headphones can feel tighter at first. The headband loosens up with use over a few weeks.
How to fix it
1. Check the headband adjustment
The ear cups need to sit at the right height. They should wrap around your ears so the headband rests lightly on top of your head, touching, not pressing. Try adjusting the cups down a notch or two. A small tweak might be all it takes.
2. Replace the headband padding
If the padding is flattened or starting to crack, fresh padding works wonders. We'll swap it out for you in our service.
3. Let the headband loosen up
If your headphones are new and feel tight, you can speed up the break-in by gently stretching the headband. Try resting the headphones on a stack of books overnight so the headband sits slightly wider than usual. After a couple of nights, the tension should ease off. Just don't force it. The headband can take a lot, but we haven't repealed the laws of physics yet.
4. Check the ear cup padding too
Sometimes the problem isn't the headband padding, it's the ear cup padding. If the ear cushions have flattened, the cups won't sit properly and the weight distributes poorly. The cup padding twists off easily, and the new ones attach the same way.
If that doesn't help
If you've replaced the padding, adjusted the headband, and it still feels like your headphones are trying to crush your skull, something might be wrong with the headband itself. Contact us at info@valco.fi. Include a photo of the headphones and your order number, and we'll take a look. Our repair shop in Kajaani fixes it. That's what it's there for.
And if the headband clip has snapped, that's a replaceable part too. Just tell us which model it is and we'll check availability.
Your scalp will thank you once the padding's sorted. Nothing more to it, really. Headphones should feel good, not double as a torture device. Torture devices are a different department, and we don't have one of those. Yet.
Big head, small head: which model fits?
The adjustment range works for most people, but if you're at either extreme, here's what to know:
- For bigger heads, the over-ear models (VMK25.2, VMK25, VMK20) are the best pick. They have the most adjustment range and the padding surrounds the ear without pressing on it.
- For smaller heads, the lighter on-ear VMK15 or the NL earbuds often fit better than the bigger cups.
- Earrings and cartilage piercings: over-ear models press around the outer ear, not on top of it, so most jewelry fits fine inside the cup. On-ear models press directly against the outer ear, so if you've got fresh piercings, go with over-ear or earbuds instead.
