So you've got a pair of Bose headphones that are a couple of years old, and something broke. Maybe the headband snapped, maybe the left driver died, maybe the ear cushions look like a dog used them as a chew toy. You contacted Bose and got the familiar spiel: "We can offer you a 20% discount on a new pair." So the solution is to buy new ones. Again.
Familiar story. Welcome to the modern headphone market, where repair is a dirty word and disposability is the business model.
Why can't you repair Bose?
Bose makes good headphones. We'll say that straight up. The QuietComfort series pioneered active noise cancellation, and their ANC is still among the best on the market. No argument there.
But Bose – like Sony, Apple, and practically every other big player – designs their headphones so they're not meant to be repaired. The ear cushions are glued on. The battery is buried deep inside the housing. Spare parts aren't sold. Service isn't offered. When the thing breaks, it's essentially e-waste.
This isn't an accident. It's a design decision. You're supposed to buy new ones every two years. For Bose, that's brilliant business. For you and the landfill, not so brilliant.
What are your options?
Let's go through them realistically:
1. Buy new Bose headphones. Works. You'll get great ANC and a familiar sound again. You'll pay 350–400 euros. In two years, you'll be in the same situation.
2. Try to fix them yourself. There are videos on YouTube. You might find spare parts from some Chinese online shop. Results vary. If you're handy and have the time, go for it. No warranty left, obviously.
3. Switch to headphones that are designed to be repaired. This is where we enter the picture.
Why Valco?
We make the VMK25 headphones. Here's an honest comparison with Bose:
- ANC: Bose's noise cancellation is a touch better. That's a fact. They've been doing it for decades and they have thousands of engineers. We have Jasse, whose ears are insured, and 14 people. Our ANC is still really good – enough to kill airplane hum and office background noise. But if you need absolute silence in the middle of three screaming kids, we can't work miracles either. Neither can Bose.
- Sound quality: This is where Jasse's craftsmanship shows. The VMK25's frequency response is tuned by hand, not by algorithm. Many people who've switched from Bose have said the sound quality is better. We won't say it – you decide.
- Repairability: This is the big one. The VMK25's ear cushions twist right off. The headband, drivers, battery – all replaceable. We have our own service centre in Kajaani. When your headphones break, we fix them. We don't tell you to buy new ones.
- Battery: 50–55 hours with ANC on. Bose's QC Ultra offers about 24 hours. Read those numbers again.
- Price: The VMK25 costs about half of what Bose's flagship does. Henri needs money to fix his Alfa Romeo and for the Death Star's corruption budget, but not quite that much.
Who should pick Bose?
It'd be easy to say "nobody," but that'd be a lie.
Choose Bose if:
- You need the absolute best ANC on the market and that's the single most important feature for you. Bose and Sony are ahead there. By a margin, but ahead.
- You want a wide ecosystem of apps, accessories, and retailers. You can get Bose on every corner.
- Brand matters a lot to you. Bose is a safe choice. Nobody's going to question it in a meeting.
Choose Valco if:
- You don't want to buy new headphones every two years
- You value sound quality more than a logo
- You like the idea of your money going to a 14-person Finnish company instead of a multinational corporation
- You want headphones where the battery lasts the flight between Helsinki and Tokyo – both ways
Summary
Bose makes great headphones designed to be disposable. We make great headphones designed to last and be repaired. Bose's ANC is slightly better. Our sound quality, battery life, price, and repairability are better. The choice depends on what matters most to you.
If you're sick of buying new headphones every other year, you know where to find us. And if you're not – well, the Bose online store is open 24/7.
Every Valco purchase funds 0.000001% of our Death Star. A Bose purchase funds their shareholders' third yacht. Your call.
